Seaplane Facts

What are seaplanes?
How do they work?
Are they safe?

We have gathered interesting facts about seaplanes, Textron’s Cessna Caravan and Samra Seaplane. You might be surprised to learn that seaplanes have been around for a lot longer and are more common than most people think.

We continuously add to the list here and on social media, so make sure to come back to learn more about the versatility, usefulness, safety, efficiency and convenience seaplanes offer.

The tide is a variable element that needs to be monitored when the seaplane is beached or moored close to shore. A descending tide may leave the seaplane stranded on the sand, while a rising tide could take the plane out to sea. These elements are always to be considered to ensure a proper operation in all conditions.

While calm wind might be an ideal condition to land at a regular airport, it also makes the water surface glassy. This requires the crew to be extra careful, even when trained for it, always putting safety first.

Both seaplanes and helicopters may take you to the resort without your feet getting wet. However, for those who love water activities, most seaplanes can carry more cargo or your water sport equipment like scuba gear or surfboards.

Statistics show that over the last 13 years of Seaplane flying in the USA (10+ million flying hours) only 3 seaplanes and boat collisions have occurred.

Some flying boats have “sponsons”, which are short, wing-like projections from the sides of the hull near the waterline. Their purpose is to stabilize the hull from a rolling motion when the flying boat is on the water, and they may also provide some aerodynamic lift in flight. Tip floats are also sometimes known as sponsons.

Seaplanes have no negative effects on the water & oil contamination unlike conventional aircrafts. The Cessna Grand Caravan EX is designed to have all fuel and oil contained in canisters approved by the Environmental Protection Agency which guarantee no contamination to the surrounding habitats.

Similar to boats, seaplanes have retractable water rudders which are used at slow speeds on the water.

While we are a last-mile transportation service ensuring comfort in bringing you to waterfront locations, our aircraft actually have a range of up to 1,500 km.

In the 1930s, flying boats were used for air travel between the United States and Europe, including routes to South America, Africa and others.

Unlike boats, seaplanes do not cause any disturbance to the underwater marine life and ecosystem, thanks to no underwater propellers. Moreover, the minimal immersion of aircraft floats of only 2 feet in the water do not pose a risk for marine species or corals.

On 18 December 1990, Pilot Tom Casey completed the first round-the-world flight with only water landings using a Cessna 206 seaplane named Liberty.

While the Cessna Caravan EX might look small in photos, it's not that small of an aircraft. The wingspan measures almost 16 meters, while the aircraft height is 5.3 meters and the length is 12.67 meters
